Secret Origin
John was a nobody who wanted to be a
somebody. Sitting in a semi-stuffed easy chair in his drawing room, John
thought about the hero he could become. Then the mail came.
Besides the numerous bills, the
letters addressed to "occupant," and the solicitations for credit
cards proclaiming that he was and would forever be unapproved, there was a note on
yellow paper. The communication declared that "due to a failure of
payment," John's home was to be repossessed. Thinking this was the
sign he was looking for, John sprang into action.
It was during this time the
Commonplace Avenger was sort of making his mark on the streets of The
City. Inspired by this, John trained (for a few weeks) as the Avenger's
sidekick, Second-Rate. Later the two would join the Seven Soldiers of
Mediocrity. As Second-Rate, John had a fair to middling career in such
groups as the Inferior Five and the JSSA, the Just So-So Americans.
After such a run-of-the-mill life,
John retired to a job in the humdrum world of Back Issue Comics, where he now
reads about people who lead much more interesting lives than he.
