This Saturday (September 29) is KUNG FU DAY at Heroes and
Dragons!
Our special guest for this event is DR. DAVID R. BANNON, a
former Interpol agent and KUNG FU MAGAZINE's most frequent
contributor! In a frankly unforgettable article he's written
for the October issue, Dr. Bannon recounts his last case with
Interpol and the tremendous impact it had on him. A lifelong
comics fan, Dr. Bannon also recalls the inspiration he drew from
comics and how they helped him deal with the real-world horrors
he had to face during his time as an Interpol officer.
Perhaps it's appropriate that Dr. Bannon and KUNG FU MAGAZINE
are teaming up to donate 100% of the profit from this event to
the RED CROSS EMERGENCY RELIEF FUND. We had planned this event
long before the World Trade Center disaster, but it was shortly
thereafter that Dr. Bannon called me about doing this as a
benefit. He and KUNG FU MAGAZINE have both gone far above and
beyond the call of duty to help the Relief Fund, and I hope we
can do the same this Saturday.
We have copies of the October issue of KUNG FU on sale now in
the Mega-Store, at $4.00 each. And even if you buy a copy before
or after KUNG FU DAY, *all* of your cash will still go to the
Emergency Relief Fund!
(PLEASE NOTE: This issue is *only* available at Heroes and
Dragons right now. It will go on sale at newsstands and other
outlets in late October, but KUNG FU MAGAZINE has granted us
exclusive premiere sales for this issue as a part of their
commitment to Dr. Bannon and the Red Cross.)
Dr. Bannon will be signing copies of the magazine and speaking
with customers from NOON UNTIL 5:00pm on Saturday (with a short
break for lunch).
Prize drawings will be held throughout the day, so register to
win cool kung fu merchandise:
- a one-year subscription to KUNG FU MAGAZINE
- KUNG FU MAGAZINE t-shirts
- the first appearance of Shang-Chi (the Master of Kung Fu)
from SPECIAL MARVEL EDITION #15

Also on hand for Kung Fu Day will be VICTOR BROWN, from
Columbia's own LAM TANG SHAOLIN KUNG FU ACADEMY. Mr. Brown will
be joining us in the late afternoon to talk about his life as a
student of kung fu! (Dragon insiders, take note: Lam Tang is
the same academy where our own martial-arts-minded back issue
manager studies!)
Dr. Bannon and KUNG FU MAGAZINE have given generously of their
time and resources to make Kung Fu Day happen -- so please save
an hour of your day this Saturday to stop by Heroes and Dragons.
You'll have a lot of fun, sure -- and yeah, you'll probably buy
something from us while you're here -- and I guess you'll
remember this as a great event -- but most of all, you'll be
helping the Red Cross save lives. And we REALLY appreciate that.
P.S. Starting in November, we'll be carrying KUNG FU MAGAZINE
(along with a host of other general-interest mags) in the
Mega-Store!

If you've ever shopped in the Mega-Store, you probably know CHAD
BOWERS. He rings up your purchases, takes your subscription
requests, and reminds you that you really do have to buy all the
stuff in your hold by the date on that little orange slip.
Chad's worked part-time for H&D since 1998, and now he's joining
the roster as a full-time staffer. Starting this Monday,
October 1, Chad will be here a full 40 hours each week! And on
December 1, after a period of training, he'll assume his new
role as Comics Manager!
That's right: Chad will be handling subscriptions and new
comics here at the Mega-Store.
If you're a fan of Scott (and who isn't?), there's no need to be
distraught! I'll merely be dropping the "comics" part of my
"Comics & Internet Sales" tagline to concentrate more on the
electronic aspects of Heroes and Dragons. Dare we hope for a
return to regular weekly newsletters? Hm, perhaps ... .
We're already hard at work on our business plan for 2002, and now
that DRAGON'S BREATH is back, this is the place you'll hear about
the changes! So stay tuned for further news ... .

Security-minded SAM OWENS will be too busy to intimidate
shoplifters and help out around the Mega-Store tomorrow, because
he's graduating from a new certification program at the SC State
Police Academy. Sam's put a lot of time and hard work into
earning this accreditation, and we wish him the best.
*I* certainly wouldn't feel confident about being a criminal
next week ... .

Some of you may remember CHRISTOPHER LAWRENCE as the webmaster
of HULK-EMM.COM, the internet's best Hulk-themed site!
Sadly, Chris has discontinued the site because he finally has
something even *more* important than a rampaging behemoth to
occupy his free time -- a brand-new baby girl!
The adorable KENNEDY JORDAN LAWRENCE was born on September 17
and (much to her mother's relief) was *not* named Jarella.
Contrary to what you might have heard. And no, I did *not*
encourage him to name his daughter after Jarella! (I thought he
should call her Jennifer Walters Lawrence.)

renamed and is now working in conjunction with the new mailing
list software. That means online sign-ups are back up and
running, although the page looks like it's been in a rear-end
collision with a Mac truck. (I'll work on that soon, I promise!)
