DRAGON'S BREATH The Official Newsletter of Heroes and Dragons http://www.heroesanddragons.com ________________________________________________________________ From: [email protected] v7.3: October 17, 2001 ________________________________________________________________ CONTENTS-a-PLENTY: >> Help H&D Support the Red Cross >> Big CGC Comics Auction (with More on the Way!) >> Congratulations to Our Recent Contest Winners >> Wear Your Costume on Halloween and Save 10%! >> Best Times to Sell Your Collection >> Personnel Dept.: Welcome Back, Josh! >> Interpol's Secret Kung Fu Warrior Gets Married (In Secret!) >> Site Seeing >> New at Heroesanddragons.com ________________________________________________________________ >> HELP H&D SUPPORT THE RED CROSS ________________________________________________________________ A quick update on the various Red Cross benefits Heroes and Dragons is participating in. If you'd like to help out on your next trip to the comics shop, this is how you can do it. __________________________ >> HEROES (Marvel Comics) << __________________________ Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada appeared on NBC's TODAY SHOW this morning to promote HEROES –- a special one-shot featuring pin-ups and text pieces from the comics industry's top creators. For a glimpse at some of the artwork, visit http://www.heroesanddragons.com/entrance.htm and click on the cover, by painter Alex Ross! The one-shot costs $3.50, with all proceeds going to the American Red Cross Relief Effort. Due to an unexpected problem with orders, the HEROES one-shot -- which was scheduled to arrive October 17 -- has been delayed. We have a direct-ship order with Diamond Comics and will be getting the HEROES comics as soon as they're available, so please check back with us from day to day. I'll post an announcement on the entrance page of www.heroesanddragons.com when the books arrive. If you'd like to reserve a copy, send an e-mail to [email protected] or call us toll-free at 1-877-543-4376. When you call, please tell us whether you'd like to pick up the book at the Mega-Store or if you'd like to have it shipped. Also, if you're an existing subscriber, please tell our staff when they answer the phone! ___________________________________________ >> 9-11: EMERGENCY RELIEF (Alternative Press) << ___________________________________________ 9-11 is a separate tribute book from Alternative Press. Likewise, it's contributors are an entirely different set of contributors from those who are participating in Marvel's HEROES project. Between the two books, you'll see examples of work from comics' finest and most highly-regarded creators. 9-11 arrives at the Mega-Store in January 2002 and has a cover price of $14.95 -– all of which goes to benefit the American Red Cross Relief Effort. For a complete list of contributors and samples of artwork from the book, visit http://indyworld.com/relief. Pre-order 9-11: EMERGENCY RELIEF now, by e-mailing us at [email protected] or calling toll-free at 1-877-543-4376. Since this book has not yet reached its shipping date, our subscribers can pre-order it online at http://www.heroesanddragons.com/SubscriptionService/subchange.htm. [When prompted for the PREVIEWS catalog number, choose "Vol. XI # 11 (Nov 2001)."] _________________________________________ >> October 2001 Issue of KUNG FU MAGAZINE << _________________________________________ We had planned “Kung Fu Day” for September 29, to promote Dr. David Bannon's article in KUNG FU MAGAZINE. But when the tragic events of September 11 unfolded, Dr. Bannon called me and we decided to donate all proceeds from the sale of the magazine to the American Red Cross Relief Effort. The editorial and sales staff at KUNG FU MAGAZINE went us one better, volunteering an extra dollar for every copy of the magazine we sold! And we sold quite a few on Kung Fu Day, but many people don't realize that time is running out on this promotion. When the issue hits regular newsstands at the end of this month, we'll be returning all of our unsold copies to Dr. Bannon. So if you want to purchase a copy of KUNG FU MAGAZINE for $4.00 (all of which, of course, goes to the Red Cross), please do so before October 31! In the article, Dr. Bannon relates how comic books and the martial arts shaped his career as an Interpol officer, and how they both came together in one of the scariest and most moving true stories I've heard in a long time! For more details on the article and Kung Fu Day, visit http://www.heroesanddragons.com/KungFuDay. Help Dr. Bannon support the Red Cross by ordering a copy of KUNG FU MAGAZINE from us before October 31. As before, you can submit your order via e-mail ([email protected]) or call it in toll-free at 1-877-543-4376. (For more on Dr. Bannon, see "Kung Fu's Secret Interpol Warrior Gets Married" later in the newsletter!) >> BIG CGC COMICS AUCTION (WITH MORE ON THE WAY!) ________________________________________________________________ Yesterday, I uploaded the first of several batches of auctions we'll be running this week. This first round includes a dozen CGC-certified comics, all with low minimum bids and NO RESERVE. That's right: No reserve on comics like BATMAN #12 starting at $875, Gold Key's STAR TREK #2 starting at $240, or the Silver Age GREEN LANTERN #12 starting at only $55! Many of these books hold the highest grades CGC has ever given. Check out the GREEN HORNET #29 –- a Harvey file copy with a beautiful yellow cover, from 1946. View the complete list of auctions at http://www.heroesanddragons.com/auctions. >> CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR RECENT CONTEST WINNERS ________________________________________________________________ You're all winners in my book! But some of you have won actual prizes from us in the past few weeks, and it's time to congratulate and embarrass you here in the DRAGON'S BREATH. First of all, congratulations to the winners of our special "Kung Fu Day" drawings: RON "COUGAR" MENSINGER won a free one-year subscription to KUNG FU MAGAZINE, courtesy of the magazine's publishers! LIZ SHANNON won a great-looking FN+/NM copy of SPECIAL MARVEL EDITION #15 –- featuring the first appearance of Shang-Chi, the Master of Kung Fu! (This prize was supplied by our special guest Dr. Bannon.) LINDBERG MOODY won the most dangerous prize of the day –- a martial-arts dagger supplied by Dr. Bannon and KUNG FU MAGAZINE. JAY STORY, MICHAEL GRIFF, and ADAM HOLMES walked off with special videocassette prizes, also provided by Dr. Bannon. Other winners included: DOMINIQUE BROCKING, STEVEN ESPINOSA, VICKI FITZGERALD, BRANT HALE, LANCE KINGERY, DAVIN LAND, YING NE, PATRICK PINAELL, STEVEN PROUSE, JOSH ROSE, and BRIAN YOUNGBLOOD. Thank you all for showing up to support the Red Cross! We hope you had fun. Also, I'd like to extend a VERY belated congratulations to those contestants who won our $50 shopping spree giveaways back in June. Our mailing list was down at the time (due to the untimely closing of ListBot services!), but we had four winners -– one announced each week on MR. MIKE'S COUCH-TIME MOVIE on WACH Fox 57. Those winners were TED HAIGLER, LIDE WINBURN, WESLEY POOLE, and JASON DONOVAN! Thanks for staying up late with us to watch MR. MIKE. (Cards and letters demanding the return of MR. MIKE should be sent to WACH Fox 57; 1400 Pickens Street; Columbia, SC 29201 -– or e-mail your demands to [email protected]!) >> WEAR YOUR COSTUME ON HALLOWEEN AND SAVE 10%! ________________________________________________________________ What do you get when you cross Halloween with New Comics Day at Heroes and Dragons? You'll find out in two weeks, as we sponsor our first 10%-Off Halloween Sale! Come into the store wearing a costume or mask, and we'll give you 10% off your purchase! We'll also take your picture and post you (and your costume) on the H&D web site for the whole world to see! (Well, O.K., I might consider leaving you off the web site if you're really, really embarrassed. But I'll call you a wuss.) One simple rule: You MUST wear your costume for the duration of your visit! We don't want people showing up at the counter and saying, "Oh, hey, lemme put my mask on before you ring me up. Will that get me a discount?" The answer, folks, is "NO!" You've got to strut your stuff, show off that costume, and enjoy the spirit of Halloween! So start working on those costumes! You've got two weeks ... . >> BEST TIMES TO SELL YOUR COLLECTION ________________________________________________________________ Got some comics in the attic you've been dying to get rid of? You're not the only one! Our back issue manager, Matt Gossett, is constantly swamped with calls to look at collections. Sometimes it's modern comics; sometimes it's Silver Age comics. Sometimes it's a collection for sale; sometimes it's an insurance appraisal. To make time for everyone, Matt has set aside a block of two hours every weekday, from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. During that time, he'll view collections and meet with his appointments. Of course, Matt will continue to look at collections on a walk-in basis –- but if you'd like to set up an appointment, 3:00-5:00 is the best time. Just call the Mega-Store at (803) 731-4376 to arrange an appointment! For insurance appraisals and large collections, you can choose to leave your books with us for a few days. Matt will grade and evaluate them for you, then give you a call when he's done! (Insurance appraisals are charged at a rate of $25 per hour, with a one hour minimum. Keep your costs low by alphabetizing and organizing your collection before you bring it in -- and if you give us the information for your insurance agency, we'll be happy to fax or mail the appraisal for you!) >> PERSONNEL DEPT.: >> WELCOME BACK, JOSH! ________________________________________________________________ Heroes and Dragons is pleased welcome JOSH GEHLING back to our ranks! Josh's return to the back issue department is a boon to both of our Matts -– Matt Gossett can process more inventory, and Matt Penn is able to devote more time to helping you on the sales floor! And with the Christmas season coming, extra staff on the sales floor is going to be very handy indeed! So if you see Josh stocking back issues or filling orders while you're shopping, take a moment to say "welcome back to the Dragon." >> INTERPOL'S SECRET KUNG FU WARRIOR GETS MARRIED (IN SECRET!) ________________________________________________________________ Well, O.K. -– it wasn't really in secret. But he didn't tell me! Congratulations to Dr. Bannon and his wife Lane on their nuptials. To view the young couple in love, visit http://www.heroesanddragons.com/KungFuDay/wedding.htm. >> SITE SEEING ________________________________________________________________ Remember our “Site of the Week” in the old DRAGON'S BREATH newsletters? Well, folks, I've got PLENTY of sites to recommend, as I've been collecting them all year! Here are a sampling for this go-round:
http://www.egroups.com/group/tyranids is a discussion group run by our own Tyranid-playing gamer ADAM HOLMES. There's a pretty big community of Warhammer players, all exchanging tips and tricks for building the perfect army. Check it out!
http://www.OrderingComics.com is the latest web site from Warren Ellis -- wherein he makes a good case for pre-ordering your comics. If you've been thinking about starting up a subscription folder, you might want to visit this site and get Warren's thoughts on the matter.
http://www.FromHellMovie.com is the official site of the Hughes brothers film based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell. FROM HELL opens this weekend, so visit the site before you see the movie.
http://games.sohu.com/fightgame/fight3.swf is just plain fun! It's not a game, so don't try to play it! It's a flash animation kung fu fight -- featuring the baddest stick-man who ever walked across a computer screen! Lots of fun, especially if you have a fast internet connection.
