DRAGON'S BREATH The Official Newsletter of Heroes and Dragons http://www.heroesanddragons.com ________________________________________________________________ From: [email protected] v7.4: October 27, 2001 ________________________________________________________________ CONTENTS: >> New Round of eBay Auctions >> HEROES #1 Still in Stock! >> FROM HELL in Stock >> Baltimore Comic Con >> Wear Your Costume on Halloween and Save 10%! >> Personnel Dept.: Brett's Baby Is Born >> Personnel Dept.: Happy (Belated) Birthday, Boss >> Science Fiction Signing >> Site Seeing: A Daylight Saving Time Reminder >> New at Heroesanddragons.com >> Changes to DRAGON'S BREATH ________________________________________________________________ >> NEW ROUND OF EBAY AUCTIONS ________________________________________________________________ We've posted a brand-new round of auctions at eBay! Most are comic-related statues, but there are some great pages of original art included as well. For the complete listing, head to http://www.heroesanddragons.com/Auctions! >> "HEROES" #1 STILL IN STOCK! ________________________________________________________________ We still have copies of Marvel Comics' HEROES #1 -- the tribute book dedicated to the heroes of September 11. All copies are first printings, and they can be ordered for $3.50 by calling us (toll-free!) at 1-877-543-HERO (4376). Limit 3 copies per order, please. Shipping & handling is $5.50. (Your copies will be shipped via Priority Mail, the quickest and most reliable service available through the USPS.) Having finally seen the book, I must report that Marvel has done an outstanding job. Some of the images literally moved me to tears, and that's a lot more than I thought I'd be able to say about a super-hero pin-up book. I was afraid that Marvel, as a super-hero publisher, wouldn't be able to get close enough to the grim reality of the situation to reflect the anxiety and pride we've all felt. I was wrong. I seriously underestimated the minds and hearts of the creators who were involved in this project. To name names would be to ignore someone who contributed to the book, and I don't want to do that. As much as I would like to thank certain contributors for their courage and their vision, I must refrain. (It's an even stickier wicket when I think about how many HEROES creators are DRAGON'S BREATH subscribers now ... .) >> "FROM HELL" IN STOCK ________________________________________________________________ If you've just seen the feature film starring Johnny Depp, Ian Holm, and Heather Graham, you may want to read the graphic novel on which it's based. FROM HELL, by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell, is widely hailed as a comics masterpiece. So if you enjoyed the movie, let me assure you: You've a harrowing ride ahead of you in the graphic novel, which is available now at H&D. If you don't live near us, you can mail-order a copy by calling toll-free at 1-877-543-HERO (4376). Please specify whether you'd like the "original cover" or the "movie cover." Copies are $35.00 each (plus $7.50 shipping & handling), and we'll include a free FROM HELL movie poster with each order (while supplies last). (If come into the store looking for FROM HELL, be sure to ask for your free poster. Tell our staff you heard about in the DRAGON'S BREATH!) >> BALTIMORE COMIC CON ________________________________________________________________ Chris, Matt G., and I are on our way to the second annual Baltimore Comic Con this weekend! The Baltimore Comic Con is a one-day show held on Sunday, October 28, in the Towson Sheraton, just outside of Baltimore. Hours are 10:00am to 6:00pm. If you're in the neighborhood, drop by and say "hello"! We'll be located to the left of the front entrance, and we'll be working hard to earn our self-appointed monicker "America's Most Beloved Comics Staff." For more on the con, visit http://www.comicon.com/baltimore. >> DON'T FORGET: >> WEAR YOUR COSTUME ON HALLOWEEN AND SAVE 10%! ________________________________________________________________ What do you get when you cross Halloween with New Comics Day at Heroes and Dragons? You get 10% off your purchase! Come into the store wearing a costume or mask, and we'll give ou 10% off the total amount of your purchase when you check out! We'll also take your picture and post you (and your costume) on the H&D web site for the whole world to see! (Well, O.K., I might consider leaving you off the web site if you're really, really embarrassed. But I'll call you a wuss.) One simple rule: You MUST wear your costume for the duration of your visit! We don't want people showing up at the counter and saying, "Oh, hey, lemme put my mask on before you ring me up. Will that get me a discount?" The answer, folks, is "NO!" You've got to strut your stuff, show off that costume, and enjoy the spirit of Halloween! Have you been working on your costume ... ? >> PERSONNEL DEPT. >> BRETT'S BABY IS BORN ________________________________________________________________ Our finance manager, BRETT LORD, just had his second child this week! Ryan Jeremy Lord weighed 9 lbs., 2 oz. and was born on Monday, October 22. Check out the cute li'l fella at http://www.heroesanddragons.com/Baby/Ryan_Lord.jpg! >> PERSONNEL DEPT.: >> HAPPY (BELATED) BIRTHDAY, BOSS ________________________________________________________________ Our much-beloved leader, CHRIS FOSS, celebrated his [AGE WITHHELD]th birthday this past week! Last Thursday, Chris turned [AGE WITHHELD] and (as usual) he let it slip by with very little fanfare. So a belated but sincere "happy birthday" goes out from this corner of Heroes and Dragons! We hope to have you with us for another [AGE WITHHELD] years! >> SCIENCE FICTION SIGNING ________________________________________________________________ Local author RON BAXLEY will be selling and signing copies of his new satiricial sci-fic novel CHASING THE MOON this coming Tuesday. And, in the true spirit of Halloween, he'll be doing it *in costume*! Look for Ron at the Happy Bookseller on Forest Drive. The signing is from 6:00pm to 7:00pm on Tuesday, October 30. For more on CYCLING THE MOON (and Ron Baxley), visit http://www.gubookstore.com/vhosts/greatunpublished.com/bookstore/author.php3?accountID=GRTU00441. >> SITE SEEING: >> A DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME REMINDER ________________________________________________________________ Hey, it's the last weekend in October, and that means it's time to "fall back" and get an extra hour of sleep on Saturday! (Well, that's what it means for those of you who are on Daylight Saving Time.) For more on Daylight Saving Time (and a nifty little calculator that will figure out the change days from now through 2099), visit http://webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/index.html. >> NEW AT HEROESANDDRAGONS.COM ________________________________________________________________ While you're surfing the web, don't forget to visit http://www.heroesanddragons.com! I've added two banners (and links) to our main page at http://www.heroesanddragons.com/entrance.htm. The first is a banner for the forthcoming tribute/benefit comic 9-11: EMERGENCY RELIEF. 9-11 arrives at Heroes and Dragons in January, and you can find a ton of information about the book and its contributors at http://www.indyworld.com/relief. The second is a banner for the Southern Garrison of the 501st Legion. The 501st is a group of dedicated STAR WARS fans who've built their own costumes from scratch -- and folks, these costumes look good! What better time of the year to celebrate great costuming than the week before Halloween? Check out the national 501st web site at http://www.501st.com and the Southern Garrison's web site at http://www.geocities.com/legion501south (or via the banner). Also on the main page (http://www.heroesanddragons.com/entrance.htm): direct links to images from HEROES #1, a link to our eBay auctions, and a reminder about the 10% Off Halloween Sale. If you want to skip straight to the auctions, go to http://www.heroesanddragons.com/Auctions. Comics covers and shipping lists have been posted for October 24 and 31. Check 'em out at http://www.heroesanddragons.com/NewThisWeek. Lastly, I've updated http://www.heroesanddragons.com/SubscriptionService/subchange.htm for the November 2001 PREVIEWS catalog. If you're an H&D subscriber, you can use this page to add or drop titles and special orders from your sub. >> CHANGES TO "DRAGON'S BREATH" ________________________________________________________________ On a final note, I'm making a couple of minor changes to DRAGON'S BREATH: --1-- The DRAGON'S BREATH listserv no longer requires confirmation for new subscriptions. If you sign up for DRAGON'S BREATH -- online or by e-mail -- you'll start receiving it immediately. There will be no more delays while we wait for the system to verify your e-mail address. So tell your friends to go out and sign up at http://www.heroesanddragons.com/DragonsBreath! They'll receive their first newsletter within 48 hours, and they won't have the hassle of sending a confirmation e-mail. --2-- You should (hopefully!) stop receiving multiple copies of the DRAGON'S BREATH. There should be one (and only one) copy of this issue in your in-box. If you are still receiving multiple copies, *please* let me know by sending a reply with the world "multiples" in the subject line or (even better) by e-mailing me at [email protected]! A big "thank you" to EDDIE EAGERTON for being the first to point out the problem with multiple copies. (And to everyone else who took a moment to let me know!) --3-- By popular demand, we're returning to a weekly schedule! Look for more details in the next issue of DRAGON'S BREATH -- which should be winging its way to you next weekend!
